Mitik, a one-year old male walrus is currently being fostered at SeaWorld San Antonio while his home at the New York Aquarium is being repaired from damage done by Hurricane Sandy. Mitik will likely remain at SeaWorld San Antonio for at least two years while his home is being rebuilt. Some of you may remember Mitik from a past episode of SeaRescue. Mitik and another young walrus named Pakak were rescued one week apart from each other in Alaska. Separated from their mothers, the two walruses needed human care and intervention to survive. Deemed non-releasable because of their age and dependence on humans, Mitik was sent to the New York Aquarium while Pakak was sent to the Indianapolis Zoo. Below is the SeaRescue episode featuring Mitik and Pakak’s rescue.
